Surfing
As my sons grew into their teen years, they began to engage surfing as a recreational pastime. They’d sometime visit various beach locales in order to capitalize on shared rides and others who could help them ‘learn the ropes’ of surfing the southern California waves. Following a vigorous day of surfing; they’d visit a retail outlet along the way home to ‘scarf’ up some needed ‘vittles’ to satisfy a youthful appetite and gnawing hunger. On one or two occasions; I made special effort to visit them at a well-respected locale named ‘Trestles’ known to accommodate more skilled surfers. I quite enjoyed watching them ‘catch waves’ and hone their skills aboard their ‘shred sleds’.

they grew into young manhood, other interests began to crowd for center stage in their lives. Michael and Bret (though still enthusiastic about surfing) began to express enthusiasm regarding surfing excursions less frequently. Paul who developed significant skill; began to incorporate alternative developments in his growing repertoire of activities. Grant however, (though as broadly engaged as the others) continued his pursuit of that ‘perfect wave’ and continues to this day as an avid surfer. In fact, during a recent telephone conversation with Grant; he revealed that a camera was located at a beach where he now surfs and he offered to send me a video of him surfing. I was delighted to receive his video and watched it several times to see my son ‘ride the waves’ so skillfully. However, inasmuch as the website does not permit videos at present; I’m unable to provide a copy of that video. Nevertheless, I’ve taken a ‘snapshot’ of Grant ‘shredding’ the waves and include it below for everyone’s enjoyment! (I apologize in advance for the ‘graininess’ of the picture.)
